Is there a difference between a miniature garden a

Is there a difference between a miniature garden and a fairy garden? Yes there is!

Miniature gardens mimic the scale of real gardens. They are scaled down versions of the real things, copying human materials and designs. The intention is look just like it would in real life. Miniature plants are used extensively to look like trees, shrubs and grasses.

Fairy gardens are meant to show the co-existence of mythical beings that might live in our gardens. As such, the scale is not as important and the natural elements mimic the human elements. A leaf becomes a roof, a mushroom becomes a house, twigs and sticks represent building materials. Of course, the addition of non-human figurines and animals with human personality are common. Regular sized plants can be used.

Tips on how to keep succulents alive.

Who can resist the myriad of shapes, colours, textures and patterns of succulents? Collecting a few...or 10...or more, is never enough! 😆.

If you are new to succulents, or if you feel you have no luck with them, or If you have been gifted one and not sure what to do, read these tips:

1. colourful varieties need to spend time outdoors and get some sunlight to keep the colour and to stay compact. A perfect place would be a porch receiving a bit of sunlight.

2. Avoid watering and misting their leaves. This can set up a situation for leaf rot and fungal growth. Instead water directly at the roots or soil. Get a variable flow mister. A hose may be easier but won't give you the level of control you need. Signs are mushy and blackish leaves.

3. Succulents hold water in their leaves which make them drought tolerant, but it doesn't mean they don't need water. Be sure to give an intense watering when the soil is dry. A slow watering or soaking the pot with drainage hole in water are some good watering strategies. Signs of underwatering are dried up or wrinkly leaves.

4. They are prones to pests. Invest in a line of defense for your plants. Mealy bugs in particular seem to love succulents. So inspect under the leaves frequently and decide how you want to treat it (physical removal, organic or synthetic chemical treatments). Don't forget to treat the soil. You can check with your agro shops for options.

So don't be afraid of grabbing one of these planters now that you know how to keep them around for a long time.

It's an art form that I have so much to learn about as yet. These delicate ecosystems never cease to amaze me. It's hard to believe that life continues in a closed system. Sometimes I don't get it right and the system perishes....sometimes I do and I am reminded of the significance of all living things and the vulnerability of our planet.

So, did you guess A?🤭........
It's C! It's a creative escape, a way to bring my imagination to life, a way to mimic the beauty in places I have been to, a projection of the ones I hope to see one day, but perhaps never will and a way to keep challenging myself with miniature design. I dream of paludariums, ripariums and vivariums!

It's a balance of beauty and science, which suits me just fine!
